Close your eyes and listen to the Charley Crockett album, Visions of Dallas, and you’ll be transported back in time to Country Music of the 1960s. Echoing the production sounds of Ernest Tubb’s “Walking the Floor”, Marty Robbins “Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs”, and Mel Tillis during the Columbia years, if only a little clearer due to technology, it feels as though you’ve come across one of the greats of the past and hearing them for the first time.
The first single of the album, “Killers of the Flower Moon”, named after the film staring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone, is a storytelling historical ballad of the Osage murders of the 1920s. “Lonesome Feeling” with its swirling steel guitar sounds talks about the hard life of the road, with a drive that begs to be added to your Road Trip playlist. The $10 Cowboy Series is a little more intentional in production with tighter songwriting than previous endeavors recorded by Crockett. The 2nd Chapter, Visions of Dallas, only solidify the honky tonk imagery Charley portrays, especially in songs like “Crystal Chandeliers and Burgundy”. The title track and first song on the album show his relaxed vocal timing consistently in the pocket, resulting in a more engaged, relaxed listening experience throughout the album.
Charley Crockett’s Visions of Dallas album was released July 22, 2024, just 87 days after $10 Cowboy, Chapter 1.
