Let’s Talk About The Rocks

Before we can talk about the musical history of Red Rocks, we have to start at the beginning. (Like, the way, way beginning.)

Part of the draw of Red Rocks is the massive red sandstone rock formation that has become the anchor of the space. These two rocks – formed over millennia of natural erosion – have created an acoustic miracle perfect for live music. Named “Ship Rock” and “Creation Rock,” these two monoliths help to create both the look and feel of Red Rocks – but also play a role in the acoustics of the spot.

The sandstone provides a unique sound experience for both performers and audience members alike. The natural curves and dips in the rocks help to capture the sound from the stage and project it out towards the crowd, creating an immersive experience for all.

The surrounding ruddy rocks and the near-endless starry sky add to the magical atmosphere of Red Rocks, which plays a pretty impressive role in the overall ambiance of the venue.

From Theme Park to Music Hall

As mentioned above, Red Rocks wasn’t always a hallowed hall. In 1927, the city of Denver purchased the land where the old “Garden of the Titans” amusement park was located, and began repurposing the spot to become an amphitheater. Led by the careful hands of the Civilian Conservation Corps, the steep canyon walls were constructed to create an ideal location for outdoor concerts and events.

In June 1941, Red Rocks was officially opened to the public as a concert venue – and the world never looked back. Red Rocks really took off when The Beatles performed two sold-out shows in 1964. Since then, the venue has hosted some of the biggest names in music, from The Rolling Stones to U2 to Beyoncé. Even Americana names such as Wilco, Woody Guthrie, and John Denver have left their mark on the iconic venue.

Quick Tips for A Great Red Rocks Experience

  • Plan Ahead—tickets for shows at Red Rocks go quickly, especially in the summer months. Make sure to check the schedule and purchase tickets early.
  • Dress Appropriately – Red Rocks is located at a high elevation, so it can get chilly at night, even during the summer. Bring layers and comfortable shoes for walking up and down the stairs.
  • Arrive Early – parking can be limited and traffic can be heavy on concert nights, so plan to arrive at least an hour before showtime to avoid delays.
  • Explore the Area – Colorado’s beautiful nature surrounds Red Rocks, so make sure to take some time to explore the area before or after the show. There are hiking trails and scenic views to enjoy.
  • Stay Hydrated – with the high elevation and outdoor location, it’s important to stay hydrated. Bring a reusable water bottle or purchase one at the venue.
  • Respect the Venue—Red Rocks is a natural amphitheater that holds historical significance for many people. Be respectful of the space, and do not litter or damage any structures.
